The Russian army has committed numerous war crimes, besieging Mariupol, devastating Bucha, illegally deporting over a million people to its territories, and killing thousands of civilians.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all these atrocities and the unspeakable suffering inflicted by the Russians on Ukraine, many misconceptions about the relationship between the two countries still exist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media and political leaders keep using terms like <em>&#8220;brotherly nations&#8221;<\/em>, <em>&#8220;shared culture and history&#8221;<\/em>, <em>&#8220;Russian sphere of influence&#8221;<\/em>, and <em>&#8220;peace at any cost even if it means Ukraine&#8217;s capitulation<\/em>&#8221; when referring to the war.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these terms is adequate. Yet, Russians collectively believe that they are <em>&#8220;the primary successors of Kyivan Rus, so they have the right to be the elder brother and decide for all\u201d<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factually, this isn\u2019t correct. Under this logic, we should call Italy and Turkey brotherly nations since they were both in the realms of the Byzantine empire. Yet, no one harbors such beliefs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, if we do want to go as far back as the 9th century, Ukraine\u2019s current capital, Kyiv, was a prominent regional center. Moscow didn&#8217;t exist at all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"htoc-kyiv-was-already-a-major-metropolis-when-moscow-was-not-even-a-village\"><em>\u201cKyiv was already a major metropolis when Moscow was not even a village.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/feb\/28\/vladimir-putin-war-russia-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yuval Noah Harari<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"872\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/MicrosoftTeams-image-5-1024x872-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/MicrosoftTeams-image-5-1024x872-1.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/MicrosoftTeams-image-5-1024x872-1-300x255.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/MicrosoftTeams-image-5-1024x872-1-768x654.webp 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USEmbassyKyiv\/status\/1496115593149358081?s=20&amp;t=r3fpzos67j29Ab93CYMgGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Embassy Kyiv Twitter Account&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The myth of the <em>&#8220;shared history of brotherly nations&#8221;<\/em> was actively cultivated during the subsequent occupation of Ukraine\u2019s lands by the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For centuries, Russian leaders attempted to assimilate Ukrainians and erase the very notion of Ukraine, just as they are trying to do at present.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/05\/06\/ukraine-mariupol-russian-filtration-camp-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russian filtration camps<\/a>, set up in besieged Ukrainian cities, resemble the Gulag concentration camps. Russians are <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/05\/europe\/russia-ukraine-grain-theft-cmd-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking away grain and equipment from Ukrainian farmers<\/a> just as they did during the 1932-1933 artificial famine.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History repeats itself. Only this time it&#8217;s harder for Russians to hide all the crimes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea that Ukrainians are <em>&#8220;brothers who share a common history&#8221;<\/em> with our oppressors is illogical and even offensive to modern-day Ukrainians. Even more so, in light of Ukraine repeatedly showing that our chosen path is towards Euro-integration and independence from Russia&#8217;s imperialistic ambitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The percentage of Ukrainians that support joining the EU exceeded 80% in March 2022, climbing up right after the full-scale invasion began.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01-1024x602.jpeg\" alt=\"Ukraine-vs-Russia-2\" class=\"wp-image-5896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01-1024x602.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01-300x176.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01-768x451.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01.jpeg 1460w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1294443\/public-opinion-on-ukraine-joining-the-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statista&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We made our national choice to distance ourselves from Russia time and again over the past three decades:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1991, 90% of voters supported the&nbsp;<strong>Independence of Ukraine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2004, <strong>Orange Revolution <\/strong>sparked in protest against the electoral fraud of a pro-Russian candidate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2014, the <strong>Revolution of Dignity (Euromaidan)\u200b <\/strong>came to be a manifestation of Ukrainian citizens&#8217; right to choose the future of Ukraine themselves \u2014 instead of following the whim of a pro-Russian dictator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2019, <strong>the Orthodox Church of Ukraine<\/strong>\u200b broke ties with the Russian Confession by receiving autocephaly from the Patriarch of Constantinople.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since 2014, Ukrainians are resisting in<strong> Russian-Ukrainian war <\/strong>that started with Crimea annexation and the Donbas occupation and escalated in 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we believe our choice to fight with the Russian dictatorship will define not only our future but one for other global democracies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"htoc-hadn-t-ukrainians-not-fought-had-ukrainians-capitulated-our-future-the-future-of-democracy-would-look-very-bleak-right-now-because-ukrainians-did-resist-because-ukrainians-are-fighting-they-ve-bought-other-democracies-a-certain-amount-of-time\">&#8220;<em>Hadn\u2019t Ukrainians not fought, had Ukrainians capitulated, our future, the future of democracy would look very bleak right now. Because Ukrainians did resist because Ukrainians are fighting, they\u2019ve bought other democracies a certain amount of time.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/english.nv.ua\/opinion\/yale-history-professor-timothy-snyder-on-10-reasons-why-ukraine-should-beat-russia-50240704.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timothy Snyder on Kyiv Security Forum on May 8<\/a>&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-ukrainian-economy-deliberate-independence-from-russia\">Ukrainian Economy: Deliberate Independence from Russia&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2014 invasion of Crimea and Donbas by Russian forces created a pressing need to reduce Russia&#8217;s economic influence over Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2013, Russia was the largest Ukraine trading partner, with <a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/CountryProfile\/en\/Country\/UKR\/Year\/2013\/TradeFlow\/Export\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">23.81% of the export partner share<\/a>. Ukraine was also greatly dependent on Russian energy resources. In 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/article\/commentary_the_role_of_russian_gas_in_ukraine248\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60%<\/a> of Ukraine\u2019s gas supply came from that state. To resist Russian aggression, we had to gain independence in terms of economy as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Ukraine ceased its participation as an \u201cAssociate state&#8221; of the CIS union and reached Association Agreement with European Union. At present, we have no direct energy contracts with Russia. Slovakia is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1306105\/natural-gas-import-volume-by-country-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leading natural gas import origin<\/a> of Ukraine, followed up by Hungary and Poland.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of economic separation and constant military aggression, Ukraine kept growing economically. Because of Russian aggression \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/after-russian-retreat-ukraines-farmers-discover-fields-full-of-mines-11651150800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mine planting in the farmlands<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/putin-marks-victory-day-show-11-week-war-84608250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocked ports in Odesa<\/a> \u2014 the agricultural sector is experiencing a decline.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s metallurgy potential is concentrated in the eastern regions, ravaged by warfare the most. Naturally, this sector will have significant losses too. The base metals enterprises have already lost over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1303943\/ukraine-war-damages-to-enterprises-by-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3,3 billion dollars<\/a> in less than 3 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So in these challenging times, the export of IT services and software products will rise to become the primary drivers of Ukraine&#8217;s economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-it-sector-the-future-of-ukraine-s-economy\">IT Sector: The Future of Ukraine&#8217;s Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the IT sector constituted <a href=\"https:\/\/ubn.news\/the-share-of-the-it-industry-in-the-ukrainian-economy-is-4-of-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4% of the GDP<\/a> of Ukraine. The industry also employed over <a href=\"https:\/\/dou.ua\/lenta\/articles\/jobs-and-trends-2021\/?from=doufp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">252,000 people<\/a> at highly competitive salaries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a career in IT is considered both a social lift for people and a way to drive the economy forward. The average income of IT specialists is higher when comparing to other professions \u2014 and thus they have more disposable income to drive the domestic economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.itukraine.org.ua\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IT Ukraine Report 2021<\/a>, more than half of IT companies offered outsourcing services in 2021. However, a growing number of firms started providing both IT services and products (33%), and some are solely product companies (16%). Some of them became known globally. For instance, the below-mentioned companies have Ukrainian roots.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Ukraine-vs-Russia-5\" class=\"wp-image-5910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.edvantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7.jpg 1460w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>IT has become one of the priorities for the Ukrainian government, especially for 2019-2021. Post-election, President Zelensky started digitizing the government services.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, there emerged <strong>DIIA <\/strong>\u2014 an e-government application \u2014 and a host of other government and volunteer-led initiatives:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prozorro \u2014 government procurement system&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Oberih\u2019 \u2014 military document management system&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IT Army of Ukraine, helping in cyber-warfare&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Universal artillery calculator for land forces&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-the-state-of-the-it-sector-post-invasion\">The State of the IT Sector Post-Invasion&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By design, the IT industry is digital-led and agile. In a matter of days, Ukrainian IT companies activated business continuity plans and started restoring their operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some relocated staff to the west part of Ukraine or European states. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/dou.ua\/lenta\/articles\/ukrainian-it-during-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">61% of IT specialists<\/a> have moved to a safer place since February 24.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present, the sector operates at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/digital\/news\/ukrainian-it-industry-continues-to-operate-as-war-rages-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80% of its pre-war output levels<\/a>. As per <a href=\"https:\/\/dou.ua\/lenta\/articles\/ukrainian-it-during-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the DOU report<\/a>, 84% of IT specialists resumed their full-time work, and only 6% of them are looking for a job (mostly sales, designers, and marketing specialists). Many clients continue working with Ukrainian IT companies that took extra steps to secure their operations and contain risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>Ukraine has been in a war-like state since 2014. We had years to hone our disaster recovery and business continuity plans.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Months ahead of February 2022 escalation, Ukrainian IT industry leaders took preemptive measures to ensure that operations could continue uninterrupted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ukrainian IT industry realizes its role in the Ukrainian economy and its responsibility to clients and partners. We cannot say that there are no risks at all \u2014 that would be an understatement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we can confirm that our continuous commitment to high service standards is now complemented by an unbeatable ability to manage risks and thrive amidst disruption. Or by paraphrasing the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/28\/opinion\/letters\/ukraine-russia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NY Times letter<\/a>: We thought we knew what perseverance was. At least 87% are able to work and pay taxes in full. As a result, the resilient IT sector has provided Ukraine\u2019s budget with a record-breaking income of <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.mailerlite.com\/w3l8b6e6a1\/1947026645143525094\/w0b1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 billion dollars<\/a> for the first quarter of 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above can\u2019t happen without our foreign clients and partners who chose to continue doing business in Ukraine \u2014 and even scale up their engagements.
