SoftPOS Development Services
Turn any smartphone into a certified payment terminal. We design, build and integrate SoftPOS solutions for banks, acquirers and payment providers launching tap-to-phone acceptance without dedicated hardware. From SDK integration and mobile payment app development to certification support, we cover the full delivery cycle.
What Is SoftPOS?
SoftPOS (Software Point of Sale) is a technology that turns a standard NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet into a contactless payment terminal. The merchant doesn’t need a card reader or any additional hardware. They accept payments directly on the device they already carry.
Customers pay by tapping a contactless card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a wearable against the merchant’s phone. The transaction goes through a secure backend, gets authorised by the acquirer and settles like any other card-present payment. SoftPOS runs on any NFC-enabled Android phone regardless of manufacturer. On iPhone, the same capability is available through Apple’s Tap to Pay.
For banks and fintechs, SoftPOS opens a faster way to onboard merchants at scale. For retailers and service providers, it means accepting card payments at the counter, at the table, on the doorstep or in the field, without the cost and logistics of traditional terminals.
You might also hear it called Tap to Phone, Tap to Pay or mobile payment acceptance. The technology is the same: software does the job that used to require dedicated hardware.
Built for Security and Compliance
For us, it’s not only about software development; it’s about fostering lasting partnerships and co-creating innovative solutions that reshape payment processes. Our expertise spans various critical domains, guaranteeing the security, efficiency, and adaptability of your payment ecosystem.
Strong Customer Authentication under PSD2 and data protection under GDPR apply to any payment solution operating in the EEA and UK. We build SoftPOS solutions with SCA flows and GDPR-compliant data handling from the start.
The current PCI standard for payment acceptance on commercial off-the-shelf devices. It supersedes the earlier CPoC and SPoC standards and covers both contactless and PIN-on-glass scenarios. We build SoftPOS solutions to meet MPoC requirements and support you through evaluation with accredited labs.
We prepare the solution and documentation needed to pass EMVCo Level 3 functional testing. Level 1 (hardware) is typically waived for SoftPOS.
Visa Tap to Phone and Mastercard Tap on Phone programmes define the rules for tap-to-phone payment acceptance. We build to scheme requirements and help you navigate the approval process.
SoftPOS runs on consumer devices, so all security lives in software and gets verified continuously from the cloud. Our solutions use device attestation and real-time monitoring, hardware-backed key storage, white-box cryptography, encrypted card data that only gets decrypted in a secure backend, and client certificates. PIN-on-glass where the transaction requires it.

SoftPOS Solution Architecture
Why three pieces?
- COTS hardware is not payment-certified, so security must be added in software (SDK) and verified in the cloud (A&M).
- Card data is encrypted on-device, decrypted only in an HSM. Never in clear text on the phone.
- A&M checks every transaction for a genuine, unmodified app on a healthy (non-rooted, non-emulated) device.
How a SoftPOS Transaction Works
A SoftPOS payment runs on the merchant’s own phone, with no separate card reader. Here’s what happens from the moment a customer taps to the moment the sale is confirmed.
-
01Tap
The customer taps a contactless card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a wearable on the merchant’s device. There’s no separate terminal or card reader involved. An everyday smartphone or tablet handles the payment on its own.
-
02Read and Encrypt
The app reads the card over NFC and encrypts the details right there on the device. The card data is protected from the first moment, so it never sits in clear text on the phone. Only the encrypted version moves any further.
-
03Check the Device
The encrypted data goes to the attestation and monitoring backend, which confirms the app is genuine and the device hasn’t been tampered with — not rooted, not emulated. This check runs on every single transaction. It’s the layer that lets a regular phone be trusted with card payments under the PCI MPoC standard.
-
04Send for Authorisation
The transaction passes through the payment gateway to the acquirer for authorisation. This is the same rail any card payment runs on. Moving acceptance onto a phone doesn’t change how the money side works.
-
05Approve or Decline
The acquirer approves or declines the transaction and sends the answer back. The whole round trip takes a moment.
-
06Show the Result
The merchant sees the outcome on screen within seconds. A digital receipt can go straight to the customer, with no paper involved.
Our longest payment clients have been with us for over a decade. That doesn’t happen if you just write code and hand it over. We stay close to the product and grow with the client.
How Edvantis Co-created Connected Ticketing and Payment Device for Stockholm Public Transport
SL runs public transport across Stockholm County and moves around 900,000 passengers a day. Its conductors needed one handheld that could sell tickets, validate them, and take card payments. SL already worked with Modulsystem, a leading Scandinavian ticketing and payment provider, and after a full evaluation chose Edvantis to build it.
We built the POS app on a Famoco Android device, integrated a PCI-certified Ingenico payment application for secure card transactions, and connected everything into SL Access, SL’s existing ticketing infrastructure. We worked directly with Famoco to tune the device firmware and with Ingenico on the payment layer.
Working with Modulsystem, we:
- Established point-of-sale and card payment capabilities on a standard Android device
- Enabled contactless acceptance over NFC for EMV bank cards, white-label tickets, and Aztec codes
- Validated optical and EMV-based tickets to MTT standards, with the device doubling as an e-ticketing machine
- Integrated third-party applications that widened what the device can do for conductors and passengers

Frequently Asked Questions About SoftPOS Development
SoftPOS turns an NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet into a contactless payment terminal. The merchant app reads a contactless card or digital wallet via NFC, the transaction data is encrypted and sent to a secure backend, and the payment is authorised and settled through the acquirer. Same as a traditional card-present transaction, just without the dedicated terminal hardware.
A traditional POS terminal is a dedicated hardware device built specifically for payment acceptance. SoftPOS takes a different approach: the payment acceptance capability runs as an app on a standard commercial smartphone or tablet. That removes the cost of hardware procurement, distribution and maintenance.
SoftPOS runs on NFC-enabled Android devices (typically Android 8.0 and above). Apple supports a similar capability through Tap to Pay on iPhone, available to developers through supported payment service providers.
A production SoftPOS solution typically requires PCI MPoC compliance (the current standard, replacing the earlier CPoC and SPoC standards), EMVCo Level 3 functional certification, and approval under Visa Tap to Phone and Mastercard Tap on Phone programmes. Specific requirements depend on the acquiring partner and target markets.
Yes. SoftPOS SDK integration into an existing app is one of our core services. We handle the technical integration, device compatibility, backend connectivity and help prepare the solution for certification.
Timelines vary depending on scope. An SDK integration into an existing app can take a few months. A full custom SoftPOS application with backend, merchant portal and certification can take 6 to 12 months. Certification timelines depend on the schemes and labs involved.
Yes. We have over a decade of experience building payment and ticketing solutions for European public transport operators, including NFC-based contactless fare collection, mobile ticketing and POS systems for conductors and validators.
We offer staff augmentation, dedicated managed teams, fixed-price project delivery, technology consulting and digital transformation engagements. The right model depends on your project scope, timeline and existing team.
Edvantis is ISO 27001 certified (TÜV SÜD). For payment projects, we build to PCI SSF, PCI MPoC and EMV standards. Our solutions use hardware-backed key storage, encrypted card data handling, device attestation and real-time monitoring.
